As-Built Documentation for an Architect
Project Manager Insight: “This project took place during the COVID-19 pandemic. The remotely-located architect working on this project did not have to travel to the physical building site to take a single measurement.” Karl Hofmeister, TruePoint Project Manager.
Location: Hamilton, Ohio
Task: TruePoint’s task on this project was to scan a 4-story vacant office building and document a comprehensive as-built survey of the exterior, interior and MEP space. The scanned site totaled approximately 120,000 sq. ft. which consisted of 4 levels, a basement, and three visible exterior elevations of the building.
Challenge: Our client for this project was an architect hired by the property owner to reconfigure the building to suit a new tenant’s purpose. With the 40-year-old building taking on various functions and housing several tenants over its lifespan, there were no up-to-date as-built drawings for the architect to reference.
Solution: Coordinating with the property manager, TruePoint was able to access the building and produce a data-rich point cloud, with sub-centimeter measurement insight. The TruePoint project manager efficiently completed 436 laser scans with the Leica RTC360 and Leica C10 laser scanners.
Deliverables: The deliverable for this project included a fully registered, intensity map point cloud that was quickly and conveniently shared with the client via a secure online filesharing platform.
Added Value: Utilizing TruePoint’s 3D laser scanning services on this project saved the client both time and money. Any travel to the site was essentially eliminated, as was the risk of estimating dimensions. Being able to see things in a 3D environment will make it easier for the client to understand the structural and MEP details and reconfigure the building.
